Another transport-related LODD has struck the EMS community this week. Ind. Capt. David Sherfick was killed in a head-on collision with a Jeep that drifted into his lane while he was returning from a transport. According to The Fatal Accident Reporting System, there were 22 fatal ambulance crashes in the U.S. in 2006.

With vehicle-related duty deaths proving to be a substantial risk for EMS providers, what safety tips or suggestions do you have while on the road? How does driving education for the general public factor into safety issues? Do you think new protocols will reduce the number of accidents or are driving dangers just a part of the job?
